Jesus – “I will make you Fishermen”

We are called to be fishers of men. All four Gospels and every New Testament book emphasizes our commission to proclaim the greatest news ever! We know the secret, they don’t, and so we must tell them.

In fact when Jesus called his disciples, He called them to follow Him, and He immediately defined follower-ship: He would make them become fishers of men, Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:17; Luke 5:10; John 20:21. It is very eye-opening to read the Gospels with fishing in mind. Jesus is showing them and training them in how to be fishermen. He truly came to seek and saved the lot, Luke 19:10. That’s how He summed up His mission. And it doesn’t take much sleuthing to find the commission to fish for men in all the rest of the N.T. books from Acts to Revelation, Acts 1:8; Rev. 12:11.

The pull down menu contains “fisherman” links. They might not seem like it at first glance, but they are. Christian Community is a mission building and mission tool. The Bible is a mission tool, learn of Christ and He will make you become a fisher of men. Prayer is a mission tool. The church is a mission agency. Rethinking our Christian privileges and duties, in missional ways, will surprisingly energize and enable us to be fisherman.

Additionally, the experience of the presence of Christ, as promised in Matthew 28:20, is cultivated by going on mission – sharing your faith. You will feel His favor, His care, His gudance. Furthermore, one of the chief means of joy in the Christian life, is found when we are sharing that which we cannot keep silent about – our Saviour.

I will post blogs, articles, book recommendations from time to time to prod, energize, remind, exhort, and encourage us to be and share the good news.

Joshua Project has one of the most complete, if not the most complete sites with current country information on people groups, unreached people, state of Bible translation.

The Gospel Coalition has sermons links, articles, book reviews and much more to help in Bible reading, study and ministry.

Desiring God is the ministry of John Piper. His sermons and other resources are excellent.
